Buying a home is a long and expensive process. There are plenty of guides and gurus in the market to help you through the process of buying a new home, but what happens once you get the keys?

In their previous article they taught you how to check your new home for defects – and in this article, we will teach you how to go about packing up your belongings from your current residence and bringing it over to your new home.

Step 1

Firstly, you will want to pack your belongings up neatly in boxes, and label them properly. Here are some ways to get boxes for free.

The chief cause of missing items when people move to new homes is the disorganisation that comes with shifting. So here are the items that you will need:

  • Small boxes
  • Medium boxes
  • Large boxes
  • Heavy duty boxes
  • Masking tape
  • Old newspapers
  • Waterproof markers of various colours

Step 2

“Moving to a new home is a great time to declutter and throw away old stuff!”

The next thing to do once you have prepared all the above items is to start packing early – at least 2 months before you move out. Start from the rooms that you seldom use, as there will be less chance of having packed an item that you will need to use again soon. Some such examples are festive decorations.

For the fragile items, you will want to crush up some newspapers and slot them into the empty gaps on all sides of the boxes. This is to provide insulation in case you drop the boxes.

Step 3

Once you’ve started packing those boxes, you are going to need to start labelling them. An easy way to differentiate your boxes later would be not only by labelling them, but also by colour coding them with the marker pens. For example, the red marker pen can be used to mark the box for kitchen items, the black marker pen for the living room items and the blue marker pen for the rooms.

This is where the masking tape will serve a dual purpose. You can use them to seal up the gaps, and also write on top of them. Using waterproof marker pens will provide assurance that your writing won’t smudge or wash off if it comes into contact with water.

Step 4

Unless you know someone who has a 4×4 truck and is willing to help you move your belongings, you are going to need to hire a mover. The typical cost for hiring a mover can go up to a few hundred Ringgit, sometimes depending on much items there is to move; and definitely depending on the distance to move it. Reasonable and transparent prices are also occasionally hard to procure, unless you have connections to the mover.

This is where TheLorry comes into play, providing you with transparent prices. We also provide delivery to all parts of Malaysia, and value added services that include manpower moving your items and shrink wrapping your packages. Available payment modes include online payment or cash upon completion of service.
