Whether you are looking to move in to a new house, helping a friend moving into a new house, or simply want to move things out of your house, your furniture contributes to most of the hassle.
It is at these times you will feel regret having that big wardrobe which barely fit through the front door the first time you bring it home.
Fret not however! As we bring you some tips that can make moving those bulky furniture a little bit easier.
1. Measure things up
Do you sometimes thought about how on earth were you able to fit your king sized bed into your room back when you bought it? Especially when you look at how small your door is?
We think of that all the time! So the best thing to do when you need to move it back out is to measure its size, just for peace of mind before you start lifting.
The best tool to use is one of those retractable measuring tapes. But if you happen to not have that available, you may also use those flimsy tailor measuring tapes your significant other might have around the house.
You can use this..
Or you can also use this!
2. Plan ahead
Moving tall furniture, especially, can be a bit tricky when you have to go through narrow hallways.
Best to plan ahead and see whether it should be better to carry them horizontally or vertically at certain points in your house. Again, measuring things up helps you to do this effectively.
3. Do it safely!
We are compelled to highlight the safe way to lift and move your furniture, as these heavy possessions may cause you a backache or two if you?re not careful.
So the first thing to remember is to never lift things with your back.
How do you do that? Easy. Whenever you are bending to lift heavy objects, bend your legs and squat before lifting. The wrong way is to bend down while your legs is straight. This will put the pressure of lifting solely on your back, which will result in a terrible backache at best.
4. Wrap it up
Thumbs up to you too bro.
This really goes without saying. But if need be said, you should wrap your cupboards, closets, wardrobes, sofas, and tables with shrink wrap when you intend to move it to your new home.
This simultaneously prevent unwanted incidents such as scratches and dents as well as drawers falling out.
5. Disassemble whenever possible
Uh huh! Now we know how that king sized bed were able to fit into that bedroom door. It arrived in pieces, and you (or the people who delivered it) had to assemble it.
What better way to move bulky furniture than to have it in smaller pieces right?
Furniture such as beds, desks, and small cupboards can usually be disassembled and reassembled easily.
Note that furniture with screws tightened with a hex key or Allen key are designed to be taken apart with relative ease.
Exhibit A
Another additional note: if you have furniture that will be more of a hassle to dissemble, or just refuse to be taken apart, refer step 1.
6. Get some cheap help
There is this interesting solution to lifting heavy objects used by movers nowadays that can really help you out on moving your furniture. It is called lifting straps, and it basically helps you to reduce the pressure of lifting heavy and awkwardly shaped objects.
Some are attached to the forearm like this.
And some are attached to the shoulders like this.
They can be easily obtained online, and are quite cheap to boot. But maybe choose ones that is not too cheap. We don?t want any foot related injuries now do we?
7. Also, get some real help
The thing with moving houses is, you can never do everything by yourself. And in the case of furniture moving, never try to move them on your own.
If you have family members and friends you can count on, now is the time to get them to help out. Body-builders or gym nuts are an added advantage.
However, if you feel like having someone that can help you out with the whole moving process, hiring a moving service can be a worthwhile endeavour.
Moving services nowadays can offer more than just simply renting a lorry to help you move out. They may also provide added services such as packing, disassemble/reassemble, and handling of special items such as pianos, safes, and marble tables.
