It’s time for your move and you’ve made the right decision to hire professional movers. But just because the pros can do what they do best, doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to help. Moving is a long process, and any way you help these movers, no matter how small, will add up.
Here’s what you can do to make life easier for movers, and effectively for yourself too.
1. Clear your schedule and be at home
Ideally, you’ll be right there to receive the movers as they arrive to perform their tasks. They’ll need you to tell them what’s what, where the largest things are, and what not to take. It’s also good to have someone around to answer questions if they have any. If possible, be there until they are all loaded and ready to to go.
2. Label your boxes
This will indicate which room each box needs to be at. Also, if you have any boxes that contain fragile items, it would be best to indicate that, too. This way, the movers can make informed decisions about the moving and unloading. So we highly recommend you sort your boxes ahead of time and label them properly.

3. Don’t make the boxes too big or too heavy
When packing your things, do try to keep a balance of the weight and size of each box. If you find some of your boxes noticeably too light and others too heavy, see if you can switch things around. This is so that your movers won’t be caught off-guard, and they won’t have to spend too much time figuring out how to arrange the boxes in the lorry.
4. Clear the way
Right before the movers arrive, try to secure a clear path between their lorry and your things. Open the doors, gates, hallways, and move irrelevant objects aside. This is so that the movers can go back and forth with ease. If you have anything that you don’t need your movers to take (e.g. your personal luggage), you can place them at the back so that nobody needs to worry about it but you.
5. Have extra stationary handy
During the move, it’s good idea to have some spare tape and markers with you. Mistakes can be made and boxes can break open. So having some tape can help with a quick fix. A blade or a pair of scissors will be a plus here. In fact, prepare some empty ready-to-use boxes just in case. Your movers will appreciate the diligence.
6. Prepare some water
Moving heavy objects is strenuous work. The human body needs to stay hydrated. Your movers will most likely have water with them, but preparing some ice water for them would be a courtesy they will be delighted to accept. But why stop there? Some snacks will prove to be a good boost for their energy and morale, a great incentive especially if you have any extra requests.
