Moving can be stressful for our furry (or feathered) family members, but with a bit of planning you can help your pets adjust smoothly to a new home. Here are some tips to ensure a stress-free transition for your animals during a move:
Before Moving Day: Prepare Your Pet
Maintain Routine: In the days or weeks leading up to the move, try to keep your pet’s feeding, exercise, and bedtime routine as normal as possible. Pets, especially cats and dogs, are creatures of habit. Sticking to their usual schedule provides a sense of stability even as boxes pile up around the house. Continue to give them regular attention and playtime amid the moving chaos; this reassures them that they haven’t been forgotten.
Get Them Used to the Carrier: If your pet will spend time in a carrier or crate during the move, start introducing it well in advance. Leave the carrier open with a comfy blanket and treats inside so your pet can explore and form positive associations. You can even take short practice car rides if your pet isn’t used to traveling. This way, when the big day comes, the carrier and car ride won’t be completely foreign or scary.
During the Move: Keep Pets Secure and Comfortable
Set Up a Safe Space: On moving day, things will be hectic – doors propped open, movers coming in and out, furniture being shifted. The last thing you want is your pet underfoot or sneaking out. Place your pet in a secure, quiet room or a sturdy carrier while the packing and loading happens. Choose an empty bedroom or bathroom and put a sign on the door (“Pet Inside – Do Not Open”) so everyone knows to keep it closed. Include familiar items with your pet (their bed, toys, water, and perhaps a piece of your clothing) to comfort them.
Prevent Escape: If your pet is in a room, ensure windows are shut and there aren’t any gaps they could squeeze through. If using a carrier, make sure it’s securely latched. Pets can react unpredictably to all the commotion – some may panic and bolt. Being diligent about containment prevents a lost-pet nightmare on moving day.
Traveling by Car: Keep pets secured in the car for their safety and yours. Buckle cat and small dog carriers in with a seatbelt, or use a pet seatbelt harness for larger dogs. Never open your pet’s carrier while driving – even the calmest animal might dart out unexpectedly. For long drives, plan stops to offer water and a quick break (on leash for dogs). Consider feeding your pet a little less a few hours before the journey to reduce motion sickness or accidents.
Settling In at the New Home
Unpack a Pet Zone First: When you arrive at your new home, set up one room with your pet’s essentials – their bed, food and water bowls, toys, and litter box (for cats) – before letting them out. Keeping them initially in a single familiar space can help them feel secure while the rest of the house is being organized. Once they seem calm, gradually let them explore other rooms under your supervision, rather than giving them free rein immediately. Also, try to start feeding and walking them at the usual times right away. Maintaining their routine in the new environment helps signal that life is normal despite the change of scenery.
Give Them Time and Love: Your pet may behave differently at first – some might cling to you, others might hide. This is normal. Be patient and gentle; don’t scold them for any stress-related mishaps (like an accident on the floor or excessive meowing). Instead, reward calm behavior and try to engage them with play or treats once things settle down. With a bit of time and your reassuring presence, they will soon start to see the new house as their home too.
