House moving is so troublesome! Here are 28 tips to help you with house moving, without pulling all your hair out.
1. Make sure you don’t have any appointments or commitments on moving day.
Because house moving is such a hassle, you may forget that you have promised someone to do something somewhere 2 weeks before. Or else you will for sure become more stressed!
2. Make a checklist
We, humans, tend to forget a lot of things. So it would be best to write down everything you need to do before, during and after the moving process. Make things much simpler meh. We made one too! check it out here.
3. Give notice to landlord
If you are renting, please let your landlord know at least 2 months prior. Usually, the landlord will fast-fast tell you what time you should tell him/her if you want to move out, right?
4. Contact you bank, utility companies, insurance, and other concerning parties
Important weih! They need to know that you are changing your home address! This will ensure that your bills will be mailed to the correct address.
5. Don’t forget to settle all your bills
Obviously lor. Ensure that all your bills have been paid before moving out. But need to put it here nonetheless or we can forget later.
6. Make sure there is water and power at your new house
Do a check to ensure that there are water and power available at least one week before you move in. It can be a stressful situation if suddenly you move in and find out the water and electricity will only be available the week after.
7. Do research on moving services
Face it, you probably won’t be able to carry all of your things by yourself. Get at least 5 quotations from different moving companies and choose the best one (Or you can get an instant quotation online here !).
Also, make sure to select the right lorry size for your move.
8. Check to see if your building needs to have special permission for the lorries.
This is one of the more annoying rules we have to adhere to if we are living in apartments and condominiums. Please check with security or the management and let them know you need to have a lorry to go into the premises on moving day.
9. Sell unneeded items and use the extra cash to top up the moving costs
If you have any furniture or clothes you no longer need, sell them to friends or online. That extra cash can lessen the burden of hiring movers.
10. Get the plans for the new house ready!
As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. Be extra prepared and plan where all the new and old furniture will be at the new house.
11. Defrost the fridge one day before you move
If you are bringing along your fridge, better to defrost and let it dry before moving it. We don’t want any smelly water spillage later now, do we?
12. Prepare a first day kit
I’m telling you now. There will be A LOT of things to pack, move and unpack. If you have successfully moved in into the new house, you should have a box that contains all the essentials to help you freshen up before starting to unpack everything.
Pack some towels, shower gel/soap, shampoo, toothbrush, a few plates and cutleries, clothes and some snacks for your first-day kit.
13. Buy some boxes and tape
Or if you are feeling a bit cheap, you can try getting boxes for free from any convenience store or supermarket. They usually just throw them away, so they might be able to give some to you with no problem.
14. Buy plastic and bubble wrap
Remember to wrap your furniture with plastic and bubble wrap to avoid your furniture from being damaged. This is to help protect your furniture during moving
15. When packing, start with the storage room
Always start with packing your storage room first. The storage room usually contains stuff that is already half packed. So do the easy part first.
16. Don’t stare and reminisce at old things
Yes, we know. That old notebook/picture/album reminds you of the good times. But it won’t help you move any faster! Pack those things and start reminiscing later when you are in your new house.
17. Wrap fragile things in some clothes
Use your clothes to wrap glass items for protection. This is if you run out of bubble wrap/ too cheap to buy any.
18. Label the boxes and colour code them
If you want to be damn systematic, try this. Pack things according to where they will go at the new house. Then colour code the boxes according to the living spaces. E.g, living room (blue), master bedroom (red) etc.
19. Arrange the plates vertically
Imagine discovering your plates or bowls breaking. Damn stress weh! This is why when packing, arrange the (clothes wrapped) plates and bowls vertically in the boxes to prevent unwanted movement.
20. Here’s a genius way to pack your hanged clothes!
Just use those big garbage bags. Just don’t confuse it and throw them away later.
21. Wrap all the cupboards
Cupboards have drawers. And drawers can suddenly slide open when you try to move them. So plastic wrap them tightly!
22. Take pictures of your electrical appliances
If you have a problem identifying all the different cables that go into your TV, computer, Blu-ray player, gaming console, and such and such, better to take a picture first.
23. Use travel luggage for those heavy books
If you’re worried about bringing all that True Singapore Ghost Stories along, fret not! Use your travel bags (ones with wheels) to easily pull them along.
24. Cover your beds with used bedsheets instead of a newly washed or new ones
Use a used bedsheet to cover your bed instead so that your new bedsheets won’t get dirty when moving in. This also helps to protect your bed from getting stained.
25. Heavy things on the bottom, lighter ones on top
When you are packing things in boxes always place the heavy items on the bottom. Place heavy items like pots and pans at the bottom and lighter items like mugs at the top of the box.
26. Separate prized possessions
Always pack your valuable items separately. Ensure that your laptops, jewellery, gold bars and treasure chests are packed securely.
27. Put all spices and seasonings into pots
Pack all the spices and seasonings in a pot to save time finding them later. All in one cooking pot.
28. Secure all bottles with caps with some plastic wrap
This is to prevent your expensive perfume from falling over and spilling sweet, sweet fumes. Remember to wrap your perfumes with bubble wrap to prevent them from breaking while moving things.
