10 TYPES OF LORRIES YOU’LL SEE IN SINGAPORE

By 24/07/2021November 16th, 2021No Comments

The illustrious city of Merlion is known for its cleanliness, modern living, and the hub for business exchange in South East Asia. And despite its size, the country consists of busy streets and even busier causeways.

Of all the types of vehicles you might find on the road in Singapore, none would stick out more like a sore thumb than the multiple types of lorries.

We did something similar for the lorries you’ll find in Malaysia by the way, which you can read here. So, if you were wondering how many types are there driving around the island, let us find out. Shall we?

1.Tow trucks

Aaahh, the tow truck, a fine specimen of a lorry you will either love or hate depending on the situation.

Park in a no parking zone? Tow trucks are the worst!

Car breakdown? Tow trucks are the best thing ever!

Someone double parking and blocking you? Towing for the win!

Do you think you could double park because you just running into the bank for a quickie? I hate you, tow trucks!

See what I mean? You can either love it or hate it. Or you can be indifferent to it if it’s just driving beside you. I guess.

2. 10ft Cargo trucks

Perhaps one of the more common types you’ll find roaming across Singapore. These are the ones usually used to haul your furniture and appliances when you move houses.

They are usually identified in different sizes, based on the weight they can move. The most used cargo trucks in Singapore are the 10ft lorry and 14ft lorry. A 10ft lorry is more suitable for room or studio apartment moving.

A handsome red one can be booked at your service, and TheLorry provides additional services such as packing tools and boxes for your stuff too!

3.Cement trucks

As a kid, I always imagined cement trucks as being just a big Slurpee machine. The way it spins slowly, especially if you are waiting in traffic behind one, can be somewhat mesmerising.

These behemoths of a lorry though can scare the bejeezus out of you sometimes. I once waited in traffic behind a particularly scruffy looking one, and I could see that the cement mixing inside the huge rotating thing is at full capacity.

How do I know that? Well, the lorry started to move but stopped suddenly with a jerk. A dollop of fresh cement came out of the shoot and splatted on the road. Good thing I am not one to tailgate (usually lah).

4.Construction trucks

Eerr..I guess cement trucks are a part of these too… But hey! I make the rule here!

Construction trucks are usually the ones you’d see in construction sites (duh). They can be tippers (for dumping soil and whatever else onto the site), cranes, or flatbeds.

5.Refrigerated trucks

Nothing intrigues me more than seeing this type of lorry driving around town. Is it filled with ice cream? Or frozen pastries? Or ice cream cakes?

Ignoring my obscene love for desserts though, these things are works of wonder don’t you think? Because it is basically a moving refrigerator!

But they are also the culprits when it comes to wetting up the road sometimes though. If you have noticed a long line of water stains on the road, it is probably a trail left behind from one of these cold transporters.

(Must..not..make..urinating..joke..)

6.Container trucks

Shameless plug-in over and done with, let’s now have a look at these absolute monsters on the road.

Container trucks are used to transport a massive amount of items across the country. You can usually see them around ports, where the containers arrive by ships.

One would be lying if one says that one is not scared of these things whenever one is driving alongside it.

Oh, and I will always imagine playing Grand Theft Auto 5 and driving one of these things to try and achieve silly video game nonsense like the one visualised above. Haha.

7.Army 5 tonners

Perhaps this may bring back nightmares of when you went to the army camp at Pulau Tekong or Nee Soon. Because of ghosts!

These army vehicles are used usually for transporting military personnel as well as boys going to camps.

8.MILO trucks

Yes. Just, yes. If you’re a fan of the malt-chocolate drink, then the fondest memory will definitely come out of one of these.

The drink seemed to taste sooooo much better when it’s from one of these trucks.

I remembered going bat-poop crazy whenever this lorry came to my school. Always tried to fill up my 2-litre water bottle with Milo, but was denied every time. Darn you Milo truck driver.

9.Food trucks

The popularity of food trucks had recently become a thing in Singapore and Malaysia.

Although our Malaysian neighbours are enjoying it more than us (because of the looser regulations), we can still see these moving providers of food and beverage whenever there’s an event somewhere.

I personally think that food trucks is nothing more than an intricate gimmick. Because most of the food sold in food trucks I bought from was mediocre at best. I know I know, everyone’s a critic nowadays.

10.The lion’s den

I don’t think there is a lot of these moving house of lions anywhere else. You’ll see this quintessential Singaporean ride whenever the New Year comes along.

I am always amazed at what those boys can do under those exhausting looking things over their heads.

It is truly a delight seeing one of these on the road. Pattern more than badminton, as we like to say.
