Import Goods Regulations in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the rules for prohibited items are set by the Ministry of Transportation (Kementerian Perhubungan), which has the authority to regulate the transport of dangerous goods across land, sea, and air.

To get specific, different departments handle different routes, and they follow global standards. Here’s a quick look:

  • Air Freight: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation adheres to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).
  • Sea Freight: The rules are based on the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, which is issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

But don’t worry, with Beyond by TheLorry, as long as your items are general goods, you can sit back, relax, and wait for your cool stuff to arrive at your home doorstep.

Know Your Goods Category First!

Before you start shipping, it’s good to know a little bit about the world of logistics, because not all items are created equal.

Different types of goods are categorised differently, which affects how they are handled.

Here’s a quick lowdown on the main categories:

  • Genco (General Cargo): Think of this as the ‘chill’ category. It’s for your everyday items that are pretty straightforward to ship and don’t need any special treatment. We’re talking about things like clothing, books, home decor, regular furniture, and most electronics. Basically, the safe and simple stuff!
  • DG (Dangerous Goods): The name says it all! These are items that can be hazardous if not handled properly, as defined by the IATA and IMDG regulations mentioned earlier. This includes things that are flammable, corrosive, or toxic. Common examples are perfumes (because of the alcohol content), aerosol sprays, certain chemicals, and lithium batteries. These require special permits and handling, for obvious safety reasons!
  • Special Cargo: This is the ‘high-maintenance’ category. These are items that aren’t dangerous but need extra care. This group includes perishable goods like fresh flowers or certain foods that can spoil, and valuable goods like expensive artwork, antiques, or jewelry that need top-tier security.
  • Bulk Cargo: This one is for the big players. Bulk cargo is stuff that is shipped loose in massive quantities, like grains, coal, or oil. Unless you’re planning to import a whole shipload of rice, you probably won’t be dealing with this category.
